Organic Growth

Grass-roots, word-of-mouth, natural progression, slow and steady, brick by brick, unforced… just some of the phrases that come to mind when we think about the organic growth of a business.

Todd Schnick, owner of Intrepid, LLC, an Atlanta marketing company, posted this update yesterday as a way to introduce his new Facebook page. I know Todd quite well and was surprised to learn that his business wasn’t already on Facebook. Anyway, his third point really hit home with me:

3. Will there be some natural organic growth? I am not going to spend my days spamming and respamming people to join the fan page. I am hoping that if people find value here, they will share it with friends…

That idea of organic growth is a good way to sum up what I posted yesterday. I think that trying to encourage the idea of organic growth is really what I was attempting to do there.

For eighteen months, I’ve been building a business. My business looks much different now then it did then. My approach, my frame of mind, my marketing, the way I generate online media, even what I do… these things have all changed. For the first nine months I didn’t let things grow naturally. I forced the issue; as Todd mentioned, I spammed and respammed… I pressed and pressed. My Facebook page for Atlanta Insurance Live has 618 fans. Big deal! I’ll be the first to admit that a large majority of those are people who never would buy insurance from me. You see, the problem was that I went looking for fans… not customers… at times, not even real relationships. I was doing it wrong. I somehow confused quantity with quality. My organic growth there didn’t start until I stopped. Interestingly enough, the organic growth that I have seen with Atlanta Insurance Live has been other agents joining me for my knowledge of the Internet. That evolution is why I started Agency Edge Marketing. I found a different market to serve and a different product to peddle. And now I’m developing websites for the general business population as well; not just the insurance industry. And I’m letting both arms of my business continue to grow naturally.

Perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve  learned so far was that by not letting things take shape, I was completely missing the mark. It seems I was focused on the next set of stairs rather than the step I was on. I wasn’t smelling any roses, and I wasn’t taking my time. But these types of lessons are what make building a business exciting. You live and learn. You grow and you get better. You improve. But sometimes you can maximize all of these things by just letting it happen.
