Awareness

November 11, 2009

It’s 8:48 a.m. on a Wednesday. I usually start my day with two cups of coffee while I check email, and send/receive messages on the various social networking sites that I’m a part of. Once that is done, I compile my to do list (something I should actually be doing the night before…) and do my best to cross off as many things as I can before Elise wakes up. Once she’s awake, the rest of the day quickly becomes a blur. The mornings are my time to regain focus and at least plan my day’s direction. Though the day rarely takes the direction I’d like, these quiet mornings have quickly become my favorite guilty pleasure.

While sitting here today a word has crept into my head… awareness.

Obviously, we are all looking to achieve something great with our lives. We have goals, big and small; personal and professional. We want success, money, family, love, friends, power, status, and more. Who can blame us? Life is amazing! Of course we all have our unique traits, perform different actions, and have different goals. I believe, however, that anyone is capable of finding the right mixture of these things to achieve their greatness. After all, everyone defines greatness… differently, right?

Awareness, and particularly self-awareness is defined as an awareness of one’s own personality and individuality. So of all the characteristics that make someone successful, there is nothing more important than being 100% aware of who you are, what you’re good at, and where you stand. A lack of awareness is surely a leading contributor to a lot of square pegs trying to squeeze themselves into round holes. It’s just something to think about.
